Lesson 1 of 2 · 14 min
Meaningful coincidence
You're thinking about someone you haven't spoken to in years, and then they message you. You keep seeing the same number. You hear a song that perfectly sums up what you're going through.
These moments can feel magical. And they can be genuinely meaningful.
But I want to approach them with both openness and honesty, because this is an area where it's easy to get carried away.
What synchronicity is
Synchronicity is the experience of a coincidence that feels meaningful. Two things line up in a way that seems significant to you.
Notice that phrase: "to you." The meaning isn't necessarily built into the event. It's in your relationship to it.
That doesn't make it less valuable. It makes it personal.
Why we notice
Here's the thing: our brains are pattern-finding machines. Once something is on your mind, you'll start noticing it everywhere.
Think about when you buy a new car and suddenly see the same model on every road. They were always there. You just weren't looking.
So when you start seeing 11:11 everywhere, it's worth asking: is something meaningful happening, or have I just started looking at the clock at those moments?
Both can be true at once, by the way. Noticing something because you're focused on it doesn't automatically mean it's meaningless. It means you need to look a bit closer.
The questions to ask
When you notice something that feels like a sign, try these gently:
- What was happening when I noticed it?
- What was I thinking about?
- What was I feeling?
- Is there actually a pattern, or did it happen once or twice?
- Am I noticing this because I've become focused on it?
- What does this mean to me personally, regardless of what anyone else says?
No universal meanings
You'll see lots of websites telling you exactly what certain numbers mean. 111 means this, 222 means that.
I'm not going to tell you those are wrong for everyone, but I am going to say there isn't one guaranteed universal meaning. Your experience, your context and your personal associations matter much more than a chart.
If 444 makes you feel safe because it was your childhood house number, that's the meaning. Not what a website says.
Write, then go a little deeper
Write honestly about what's on your mind. You'll get a few personal reflection questions, shaped by the course, to help you notice what's underneath. They're prompts, not answers.
Take your time. Mark it complete when you've done the exercises.
